Mona is down with another bug, and it seems like this summer has been has been one of her worst for continuous bugs. Because of my meds, they normally can't get a grip on me. I've finally finished weening myself off that one seriously nasty med, took me awhile. ( This is mostly to keep my family members updated on what happening with Mom & Dad.)
We are getting prepared to start renovation on our bedrooms in the house. We're moving Susan into the red room, then taking the wall down between our bedroom and Susan's to make one large room for me to have my office area upstairs, plus enlarging the bathroom- nearly doubling it. Now the tear down work will go pretty fast, I'll appreciate your prayers that I don't get electrocuted in the process. Happened once in Whittier, while removing a wall in my office and learned with a SHOCK some had cover over an electrical socket and didn't mark it. I put a screw driver right into the socket, which resulted in me being sent flying across the room- to the delight of Mark, one of my officers. Burned the handle on the tool and lit up my life, but I hopefully learned something by it. Next time I'll have someone else stick the tools into the wall.
Recently we were treated to a night at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood by our eldest son John Leroy and his beautiful wife, Kelli. This was a joint birthday gift for mom and Dad, plus were were treated to dinner. Also got to meet Kelli's dad, Art, a Navy veteran and a real gentleman. This resort is massive and they treat you like royalty, I really recommend it. Their pool is nice sized, half-Olympic in size and the Jacuzzi could hold 25-people. Both are salt-water. I spent my time in the Jacuzzi, just floating and it was extremely warm. When doing a dead-man's float I have no pain and it is fantastic.
They'd been doing extensive road work on the drive to Soldotna and this is one nasty drive right now. But, once the project is done it will be a comfortable drive for about 4-years. By then, the winters have reduced the asphalt and berms are growing in the road surface.
I just heard today that the State and Feds are canceling the king fishing on the Russian River for maybe 3-yrs. People have fished the grounds to heavily, along with all the illegal commercial fishing companies from different countries. Word is that some scientists are saying the fishery should be closed for 20 yrs to get the numbers built back up. This closure could put something like 2,000 peninsula fishing guides out of work for those wanting to catch kings. The state has to allow enough fish through for the river villagers to subsistence fish and for a particular number- estimated of course, to reach Canada via their end of the Yukon River. Villagers mostly rely on their fish wheels, which work pretty well.
In Dillingham, my police chief and a Alaska State Trooper friend were running a subsistence net. I got called to come down and give them a hand with their net and we pulled out 168- silver salmon and red salmon. Not easy work believe me. But the fish were divided up among a lot of people. Ironically, I personally don't like the taste of salmon. But, when the chief calls, we lowly officers simply reply with a "on the way!" When I became Police Chief for Whittier I found this to be a nice attitude for young officers. But, I never asked for them to get all slimy with fish. Now shrimp, that's another matter. Whittier was overflowing with shrimp.
