About the M&E Magazine
Bob Jacobson, the owner of Alaska Dreams Publishing, started in the the publishing business in 1985. The M&E Magazine that Jacobson and Michelle (Perry) Peck published was the first publication in Alaska and one of the first in the world to use the new "Desktop Publishing" technology commercially. In 1986, Bob worked with a traditional book publisher in Alaska (That New Publishing Company) and used the new technology to typeset books. He also taught various seminars that were hosted by TNPC to show people how to self-publish books and newsletters. In those days, there were no scanners or digital cameras. The Apple Laserwriter at the time printed at 300 dpi and cost over $5,000. The Macintosh 512K cost over $3,000. As you will see, issues 1 - 6 were produced by photocopying. Starting with the 7th issue, the graphic design took a dramatic leap forward. Issues 7 -13 were printed using offset printing. Issues 14-16 were printed in tabloid format on newsprint. The M&E Magazine was mentioned on page 63 of the June 30, 1986 issue of Time Magazine. (See below)
