After my cancer diagnosis in March 2009, one of my good friends suggested we get involved in Relay for Life, which was a big fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. That July we attended the event just to see what it was all about. The event took place at Longyear Park in Coleraine MN.
It was like nothing we had ever seen before! There was music, food, games, contests, and a survivor walk in which names of cancer survivors in attendance were read off and they walked together around the park. It was truly a remarkable evening!

By the next summer, Sue and I decided to put together a team of friends, family and co-workers and we chose the name LA DE DA DIVAS. We had an awesome 5 year run. In addition to selling luminaries to honor a survivor or in memory of someone who had lost their cancer battle, we had bake sales, pancake breakfasts at Applebees, and a rummage sale.
The event itself was amazing! Each team put up a campsite and throughout the night would walk the sidewalk circling the park that was lit up by thougsands of luminaries. It was truly beautiful!
Each year Relay had a theme, and the campsites were decorated to fit the theme. One team would win the campsite award. This award was set up to look like a campsite, and each year the winning team would have to add something to it before turning it in the next. year. The LA DE DA DIVAS were proud to win this award one year.
Our first year we won the bronze award. In our 5 years we also won silver and gold. But more important than the money we raised and the awards we won, were the friendships we made...Jean C., Norane S, Karen K., Candy D, and many others.
Sadly, we lost a team member, Patty Pierce, to cancer a couple of years ago. Patty was a good friend, the sweetest lady you would ever want to meet. She will be forever in our hearts.
Below are some pictures from our 5 years of Relay for Life. There are lots more, but these are the ones I could find.
Until Next Time,
Rena
