Greetings to All: A couple days ago the smoke from the Swan Lake Fire was so bad I couldn't see the end of the driveway, but then a strong breeze came up and emptied the valley of the smoke. We've had rain and wind since then and no more smoke problem. Winds have forced the fire back on itself, at least in our fire.
We've had about an inch of rain, but would love some more. But prayers are being answered. So far Alaska has seen 275 fires and these fires have burned up 4.5 million acres of land, BUT, there has been no report of loss of human life. Sadly there has been moose, bear and smaller critter killed. Several hunting area are closed of for this month's moose season.
Elizabeth and Chris are here for the weekend, brought a trailer load of large window over that Chris traded labor for. We might use them for either the deck we hope to build or a new green house. But it will be next summer's project. Later today we are driving to Seward. A friend who owns the rental garage storage facility has one filled with a person's property and he's offered it to us if we clean it. Hs furniture, christmas things and a lot more. We will load Chris's trailer up take some home, some to the dump and some to a thrift store. Our second 45-pax school bus has been moved onto the property and next week Chris and Elizabeth school bus is being moved here. As I said earlier we look like a school with three buses in the backyard. What I need to do is find an old Greyhound bus, maybe an old Army or Air Force Bus. Good thing my land is surrounded by trees, or the neighbors might complain.
There's been some question as to why the Army is posted at the road closures because of the fires. I believe they are Alaska Army National Guard. But, it has been said that some of the vehicles are carrying anti-riot sonic weapons. As to why they are here is unknown, especially with such weaponry.Maybe the they're afraid the moose and bears might riot over so many fires burning. Oh, we've become used to the Army flying over our house, helicopters and transports since we moved here. President Obama even fly by our place one day on his way to Seward, Marine One was guarded by a Cobra Gunship.The army flies back into one of the glacier valleys south of us and I believe its for arctic training on the glaciers. They fly in and later in the day they fly out. A lot of people watching the rebuilding of the Sterling Highway, nearly 60-miles of hardtop between the Seward Highway at Milepost 37 and the cities of Sterling and Soldotna, are wondering why a 5-lane road needs to be built where a two-lane road has existed for the last 50-years. Will take at least three years to finish the project. Conspiracy Theories abound in Alaska, ever since they built the HAARP System nearly 20 years ago. I try to stay on top of these theories and sometimes they can give you a laugh and other times they make you think. But I see enough real life tension out in the world to cause one to worry some as the world's powers like to play a dangerous game of chess with one another.
Had two mass shootings in the US this week; one in Birmingham Alabama at a high school football game with 6 people were shot and some 10 people injured when they were trampled on. The second one happened in Texas, between Midland and Odessa, where a gunman stole a U.S. Postal Van and killed 7-people and wounded 19, 4 Police officers were wounded in this car chase. Maybe they need to arm the postal carriers? So far 52-people have been killed this year is mass shootings in the US. All the stabbing attacks have shown that confiscating the guns won't be the answer. You just might need your hunting rifle if a major depression hit the US and you needed to hunt for your meat, or need to protect your home from looters.
Word is that a young man was killed outside Seward, beaten with baseball bats for sexual assault of one of the attacker's sisters. Yes, I've seen baseball bats used before in a couple murders I investigated. I've investigated my share of major assaults or murders where victim was stomped to death, set on fire, stabbed and even died as the victim of a wood axe attack. I even had one where a vehicle was used to kill with. In probably 70% of the cases alcohol or drugs were involved. Oh, in most cases the attacker would be very apologetic once the sobered up. Kitchen knives come tio hand quickly when a couple starts fighting, and a couple times it was hot grease from a frying pan, or once it was just the pan itself. I had one case in Dillingham where a man my size was constantly being abused by his small native wife. He refused to file complaints against her, but I finally arrested her for attempted murder when she set fire to the couch her husband was sleeping on. Insanity, temper, religious reasonings, finances, ethnic reasons. Something that just pushed someone ever the edge. I was the sniper assigned to a shooting in the military, back when I could still shoot and didn't wear glasses, when a young GI took a couple rifles to shoot up every car in the barracks parking lot. Thankfully, I was never ordered to make the kill shot, because the shooter was only hitting parked cars. He was angry over a Dear John letter. Our team finally broke into the room and took him down. He later received an Undesirable Discharge. Never did find out if the insurance companies sued him or not for all the damage he had caused to the cars. We were called SPECS teams and trained by the Los Angeles County SWAT Teams. Which was real cool. I worked out with the snipers and these men had to be the greatest shots in the country, put me to shame at any target over 500 yards, or maybe it was 50 feet. They were good.

Some gutsy protesters in Hong Kong, willing to take on Chinese Military if and when they come across border. I was 10 years old when I watched Los Angeles Riots and the sky was filled with the glow of flames and ash fill for over 30-miles away. I was 15 when I got caught in the Phoenix, Arizona Race Riots and then I fought in two race riots at Whiteman Air Force Base in 1971-72. Oddly enough there was so little racism in Vietnam for it was all of us against them. But in Thailand, I saw some some of the worst racism I ever saw as each ethnic group turned on the others. Black Power, White Power, Brown Power....real nasty and I saw it spread into the Thais, who would support one racial group over another. Years later I read how the Thais and Burmese Buddhists would battle the Muslims and so many were being killed. They are still fighting it out.
I believe in Freedom of Religion, but I do not believe one religion should fight the other in our country. Though I HATE terrorists from any religion. I believe it is wrong to allow a certain religious law to exceed the laws of the United States. Now in Eastern Canada some provinces allow for Sharia Law to operate. This should never happen in the US.
