Others, will they just have gotten tired of deep snow, minus 40 weather or worse and look forward to the 4 month long get-a-ways. If you're gone too long you risk losing your Alaska Permanent Fund and have to start the application process all over again and this means a whole year of residency before you are eligible. Some don't come back and that's sad. But for us who stay, we consider ourselves a tough lot. This will be my 36th Alaskan winter. The military brought me up here in Jan. 1978 to weather minus 80 below for 7-days in my second winter, but we saw a lot of minus 60 and weeks of minus 30 and minus 40 in winters to come. My family has gone through 30-feet of snow one winter and windchill factors of 122 below zero in the winter of 1988-89. I've experienced third degree frostbite of both hands, with some foolish doctors threatening to cut them both off, plus chunks of my forehead, my nose, and second-degree of my feet and rest of my body it seems. I once frostbit both my feet because I was stupid for obeying orders from a stupid uncaring military officer. He later apologized, from his base in Oklahoma.
Yes, we can be tough but a little frozen between the ears, too. I still laugh about the time I went out on foot searching for a Christmas tree at minus 40. Got it too, but my wife Mona was the smart one who stayed home in a nice warm bed. "Sometimes a man's got to do what a man's got to do". Famous saying by John Wayne. He once made a movie in Canada, about crashing his aircraft in the wilderness. He and his crew survived, while their friends searched for them from the air. Now it was supposed to be minus 40, but they had no frost coming from their breath and John almost never wore gloves. Technical adviser must've been off set. But that ain't going to work at minus 40. I know. You also don't grab anything metal at those temperatures like he often did, barehanded. With the sun up as high as it was in the film, this must've been early April and probably above freezing during the daylight hours. The Duke's insurance company wouldn't let him out there in such harsh temperatures the film called for. Now a lot of people considered Duke a coward for not joining up with the military after Dec 7th, 1941, like so many other stars did. But John Wayne tried. However, the military wanted the Duke to remain at home and continue to make films. He also made training films for the military and helps sell war bonds through his Army, Navy and Marine Corps movies. Oddly enough, back then the Air Force was the Army Air Corps and the Marine Corps was under Navy Command. Two primary services instead of four we have now, plus the US Coast Guard, and all of our National Guard/Reserve Units.
Well, I've got a few News Briefs for over the last two days and I'm only printing out the few I feel need to be noticed. But remember, stay on top of the Global news. There's things happening out there you should know of.
NASA prepares for tomorrow's Planet MARS passage of COMET Sliding Spring at 87,000 miles clearance. NASA's three orbiters and two rovers being repositioned for Sunday's memorable fly-by. It's the Comet's first known visit to the inner solar system in one million years. Scientists estimate the nucleus to be approximately half-a-mile in diameter, but do not expect it to strike MARS. But the comets tail with sweep in over half of the planet with debris field hitting the planet, causing electronic and mechanical damage to any and all 5 of NASA vehicles. Plus the European and Indian orbiters. Sliding Spring should pass by the sun in 6-days after Mars and swing back out into deep space for another visit one million-years from tomorrow. (What a show).
Another complaint is made a China expressed how they were "Firmly Opposed" to Japanese lawmakers visiting the Yasukuni Shrine. Shrine honors 14 Class-a World War II criminals who comitted hundreds of thousands of atrocities against China, Korea and Southeast Asia. During Japan's four-day Autumn Festival, (3) Japanese female ministers did visit the notorious shrine. President Xi sent a sacrifice to the shrine from his conference in Europe, by said it was sent in a "private citizen capacity". ( This would be as if Hitler was enshrined with a memorial in Berlin, Germany. Along with his major staff.)
India successfully test fires its home-made, nuclear capable sub-sonic cruise missile- Nirbhay, from their test range in Eastern State of Odisha. With range of 1,000 km, it has a fire and forget system that cannot be jammed. (This new weapon will cause stress to the Pakistan, Chinese and Russian military.)
Chinese stocks closed down 0.65%. They had opened the day at down 0.16%. Hong Kong Gold went down 8 Hong Kong dollars. China also announced cut in retail gasoline by 300 yuan ($48.78) per tonne and that of diesel at 290 yuan. Venezuela blames the United States for global oil price slump.
WHO declares Ebola outbreak in Senegal is over, and commended the country on its diligence in ending the virus.
NOTE: Iraqi pilots have joined the Islamic State, giving the IS their first Air Force of (3) captured fighter jets. Iraqi Pilot will now begin training of IS militants to fly. (These aircraft will probably be capable of carrying the chemical or biological weapons the IS now has in its hands. I imagine they've become the prime targets for the Coalition Air Force.)
Yesterday's Ebola Statistics- WHO reports 9,191 cases and of which are 4,546 deaths, which is shows 99 deaths below 50%. 239 deaths were health care workers.
President Obama signed (2) Executive Orders, one on Thursday and one on Friday. These are long Executive Orders and I am not going to type out the whole things. You should go to White House. Com and look under Executive Orders and Statements. The Fact Sheet for both are published under the Statements. Please review them both, but 2nd one will have more to do with general public.
EXECUTIVE ORDER: ORDERING THE SELECTED RESERVE AND CERTAIN INDIVIDUAL READY RESERVE MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES TO ACTIVE DUTY...TO AUGMENT THE ACTIVE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE EFFECTIVE CONDUCT ON OPERATION UNITED ASSISTANCE, WHICH IS PROVIDING SUPPORT TO CIVILIAN-LED HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE AND CONSEQUENCES MANAGEMENT SUPPORT RELATED TO THE EBOLA VIRUS OUTBREAKS IN WEST AFRICA. ( It goes on in length from there, but that is mainly the title and comes with a lot of government speak. Because of all the military cuts, President Obama is calling out selected reserve units. This will have a major effect on people's lives, endangering them to infection. But is Congress asking these countries where their military is posted and where is the so-called blue helmeted police of the United Nations. Or will these reserve units be ordered to wear the blue helmets, as our troops have been ordered to do before?)
EXECUTIVE ORDER: IMPROVING THE SECURITY OF CONSUMER FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS. (Basically this Executive Order, which is quite lengthy and full of government speak, will transform ATM machines all through our country to work on a chip and pin method instead of a strip. This will also effect the government cards such as those who receive Food Stamps and similar programs from Uncle Sam. The government machines will be working by 1-15-15, but civilians are being given up to one year to have their machine changed with this new software or security comparable with this chip and pin method. This is being carried majorly as a counter-device against identity theft and endorsing a new federal plan to put all federal offices in the fight together to stop the cyber attacks to steal identities and funds. FACT SHEET showed that Home Depot, Sam's Club, Walmart and Target, and American Express to join with Chip and Pin compatible card terminals. Visa to soon launch their program in 20 cities, all for checking, credit, debit and other payment cards you might use.
Now in basic English, after all these waves of hackers that have hit big companies, banks and credit unions, our government is coming to the rescue right away. I'm trying to remember the last time they appeared this fast, which for a brief all niter made me wonder just who were those hackers- private sources or government geeks setting us up. But I am always looking at the conspiracy theory. BUT, this now makes your bank or credit union a partner with the US Government. They'll now have complete access to your financial dealings and will never need a search warrant now for same. They will know where you bought you gas, why did you need to buy 6 blocks of .22 caliber ammo or even that military-style rifle. In fact, government watchers, the computers, can stop your transaction in process by simply saying you no longer have the funds. Maybe the computer thinks you've bought too much meat this month or too much high-calorie sweets and stops you. The computer is your partner like never before and Uncle Sam is behind it. Just think about your monthly transactions- even the $500 you might have given to the church and Big Brother cancels that. Now my check goes to the credit union and so does my mortgage, but I'm going to start working in cash and money orders. Besides, my retirement is much too small for Uncle Sam- but not my writing.
President Obama issued two memorandums, also logged in White House. Gov. I check this site every day, as he is required by law to list such actions unless it is considered to be covered under National Security.
(1) has to do with Order of Succession within Social Security System. (2) has to do with with Order of Succession within Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. Both to handle in the event of death of the Directors for same.
United Nations begins its biggest food distribution in Sierra Leone, delivering food supplies to 265,000 people on the outskirts of Freetown. Largest Food Distribution since Ebola Crisis began. UN Ebola appeal for AID still at 38% of the $1 Billion it asked for: $377 million of the $988 million needed. Germany just pledged another $108.1 million to fight Ebola.
Russian ruble passed 41 ruble to the US Dollar for third time this week and passed record low of 52.59 against the Euro. Battered Russian currency has lost 17.6 of its value against the US Greenback in last 3 months alone. A third of currency exchanges in Moscow have run out of U.S. Dollars, when contacted by Business Daily on October 9th. For Russians this has happened before, and they have grown weary of it.
Censorship fears grow as state officials move to tackle "Negativity" in Russian media. Parliament's upper House has advocated applying State pressure to combat this negative news "poisoning" the country's image. "It is a wonky situation when National media show only what they themselves consider important or a hot topic," said Igor Chernyshev, the proposal's mastermind. (Odd, we just called it freedom of the press, which was used to catch a lot of civilian and government higher-ups dipping their hands into the honey-pot. Russia began to experience the same thing, but the Russian hierarchy sure didn't like being exposed as crooks or worse. So, now they want state censorship again, but I'm betting or maybe hoping the Russian people won't stand for it. They've had their taste of freedom and many of them want their version of it and it involves Freedom of the Press.)
Reports says the soldiers being sent to Liberia are only receiving 4-hours of training in reference to the Ebola Crisis. How to don their safety equipment, take it off and clean it, following by a written test. No military quarters, virus free, has been set up for them. They will be staying in hotel with residents, but everyone is said to be making extra effort to make sure the hotel and other lodging are Ebola free, until a camp can be set up. The Army is there to build a 25-bed hospital and 17 treatment centers.
Earthquakes: (13) around the globe at 4.0 or better. (6) small ones in Alaska of 2.5 or higher. (2) 5.1/4.5 in Indonesia. (3) 2.5-3.5 in Oklahoma

"State of Religious Freedom is Moving From Bad to Worse in Mainland China", said U.S> Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), responding to the new report by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. "The underground church has been brutally persecuted in China, both Protestant and Catholic." But he also added how the State-Recognized Church is facing persecution. "Chinese authorities continued to harass, detain, imprison, and interfere with religious activities of members of both registered and unregistered protestant communities who ran afoul of government or party policy." He then added, how easy it was to, "...run afoul of government policy. " Even talking about religion could be considered a violation. The government prevented Catholics from joining in Pope Francis in his visit to South Korea, and threatened Chinese Catholics already in South Korea from participating in papal events.
Representative Smith reflected on his concerns stemming from a meeting he had with the atheist Head of the Government's Religious Freedom Office. "They are so dismissive and disparaging of God and religion and religious expressions, it's no wonder that they are at a hair trigger to do anything they want, and they don't do it with impunity to hurt religious expression." (Think about what is going on with God being shoved out of schools, of monuments on public property, atheists building their churches in our neighborhoods, Muslim movement spreading. Could this be America in 10 or 20 years. If not, why not? Who will stop it from happening ....besides the Lord's return. China is dismantling their Christian churches, picture that happening to yours. I do and mine is right next door.)
Well, I do believe it is nap time, that or chores. God Bless, Bill
