Clouds clearing from a wet night, maybe a nice day coming to Moose Pass. Another dousing of fresh white fluff on the mountain tops, giving them that special alpine look we so love, and have no way of stopping if we didn't. Now up here we do have a small portion of our population who leave Alaska for part or all of the winter, and we refer to them as "Snowbirds." They are often the elderly, who are weary of the icy weather causing them such pain from various body ailments and they head on off to Hawaii or our desert climates of Arizona and New Mexico. Not too many Texans up here, Alaskan makes them feel strange with all this wide open space and jokes of how if we'd cut Alaska in half, Texas would be third largest state. But we try to mind our manners around Texans, they're generally a nice people.
Others, will they just have gotten tired of deep snow, minus 40 weather or worse and look forward to the 4 month long get-a-ways. If you're gone too long you risk losing your Alaska Permanent Fund and have to start the application process all over again and this means a whole year of residency before you are eligible. Some don't come back and that's sad. But for us who stay, we consider ourselves a tough lot. This will be my 36th Alaskan winter. The military brought me up here in Jan. 1978 to weather minus 80 below for 7-days in my second winter, but we saw a lot of minus 60 and weeks of minus 30 and minus 40 in winters to come. My family has gone through 30-feet of snow one winter and windchill factors of 122 below zero in the winter of 1988-89. I've experienced third degree frostbite of both hands, with some foolish doctors threatening to cut them both off, plus chunks of my forehead, my nose, and second-degree of my feet and rest of my body it seems. I once frostbit both my feet because I was stupid for obeying orders from a stupid uncaring military officer. He later apologized, from his base in Oklahoma.
Yes, we can be tough but a little frozen between the ears, too. I still laugh about the time I went out on foot searching for a Christmas tree at minus 40. Got it too, but my wife Mona was the smart one who stayed home in a nice warm bed. "Sometimes a man's got to do what a man's got to do". Famous saying by John Wayne. Visa to soon launch their program in 20 cities, all for checking, credit, debit and other payment cards you might use.

They'll now have complete access to your financial dealings and will never need a search warrant now for same. They will know where you bought you gas, why did you need to buy 6 blocks of .22 caliber ammo or even that military-style rifle. In fact, government watchers, the computers, can stop your transaction in process by simply saying you no longer have the funds. Maybe the computer thinks you've bought too much meat this month or too much high-calorie sweets and stops you. The computer is your partner like never before and Uncle Sam is behind it. Just think about your monthly transactions- even the $500 you might have given to the church and Big Brother cancels that. Now my check goes to the credit union and so does my mortgage, but I'm going to start working in cash and money orders. Besides, my retirement is much too small for Uncle Sam- but not my writing.
