I remember when we lived in the remote communities of Dillingham and Skagway, where food prices were really high and fresh fruit and veggies were hard to come by. When working in Skagway we often drove into Canada, 120 miles each way for Whitehorse, Yukon territory to get food at a decent price. We had this invisible border between our two communities and once in Whitehorse everything was marked in French and English. They also had a theater and every once in a while we'd drive up to grab a movie and then head over to the only Dairy Queen in a thousand miles for a milk shake and a hamburger. People were always nice, except for some of the drunkards who drove down to Skagway to hang one on. Working there as a police officer I learned how strange the Canadian Code of Law seemed compared to our laws. Where we separate our laws like Assault, Sexual Assault, Disorderly Conduct and by degrees, they list it under their "Violence" Code and by degree. Had me confused there early on when calling up the Mounties and running a Canadian's criminal history so I could report to our judges what sort of history the subject had. Now the Mounties, they were great and treated us quite well when we would come up to visit them. Different times one or two of us would drive up to provide some training they were not normally getting. Back then the Mounties didn't carry nightsticks and they were finally getting them and we were asked to come up and provide training. Only when we went up there we found they had been issued riot batons 3 feet long. Luckily, I had been riot trained in the Air Force with such a baton, so I did the training. But I think after leaving there they would most likely be using them like a baseball bat. Oddly enough the Mounties have a regular bar in the basement of their post. Another strange thing was to learn how Mountie Posts farther then a 100 miles or more from a large detachment has what is called, "the Search Warrant in the Boot". This is where the First Sergeant of the post, and only him, can kick down any door in his assigned area without the need of a Queens Writ- there name for a Search Warrant. Mounties also carry an amazing amount of authority and if you were to assault one, you've made a grave mistake. I was up there visiting one day and this Mountie had been beat up pretty good by a good sized man on drugs. He was being transported to their jail and kicked his way out the back window of their patrol car. Will following the patrol car were two Mounties in a Chevy Suburban and they promptly ran over the man with both sets of wheels. They didn't call an ambulance, but tossed him in the back of the Suburban and continued taking him to jail.
Now the modern Mountie doesn't wear the red uniform anymore, except for formal dress occasions. No, they wear a basic green military style uniform. I was told all the federal services, including military, wear the same uniform and only the collar brass if different. No this was back in 1982-84, I have no idea what they wear now....oh the Mounties also wore their buffalo head badges. Their police academy is actually a year long affair and by the time you graduate the officer is fluent in French and can ride a horse to their standards. While I was in Skagway, I worked several joint cases with the Mounties and several concerned search and rescue on the border. Our city limits went right up to the Canadian Border. In 1984, the Colonel of the Whitehorse Post highly complimented me by inviting me to attend the RCMP Academy, as he would sponsor me. I really thought about going until I soon learned I would have to become a Canadian Citizen and drop my American Citizenship. So I thanked him for his kind offer, but expressed how important my US Citizenship was. My Chief also advised me he would have to fire me if I went.
I wrote a lot about the RCMP Officers in my story "Stronghold", which is to follow the "Rookie" and is pending publication. I learned a lot in Skagway, to include spiritual warfare, taking on an 80 year old witches coven and dealing with 56-softball teams for three summer tournaments. Most of the teams came from Canada and there was an awful lot of alcohol and fighting involved. The White Pass Railroad, the main employer for Skagway and its closure produced 63% unemployment overnight. Bad time for everyone. Churches had a hard time in this town because of the darkness and several of them had closed over the years. How this was brought about is in the story.

While Checking my various news sites I have noticed the numbers of cases and deaths to certain countries do not always match up. I believe if you go to W.H.O. News (World Health Organization) you may get the latest numbers. But Sadly, not always.
Tokyo has not made a decision on whether they will postpone this years Olympics. I have read reports that if numbers continue to grow the U.S. may postpone the election primaries and if bad, the general election. As to how long the postponement might be I have heard a lot of different guesses.
I know a lot of people are going to be put out of work or already are due to to this crisis and this can be scary and tough for the working class and those who do not have any income. I do not know what the answer is. But there is deep concern this crisis could drive us into a 2nd Depression. Even this big bail out package being tossed about can be scary as it will cost possibly a trillion dollars or more when all said in done. We might be better by handing out provisions, provide housing and health services. Some of you will remember this occurred in the 1930's, the Great Depression and the President set up all sorts of work projects from dams being built, roadway and train tracks built. I am not an economist, I do not have the answer, but I do know World War Two was a major factor in taking us out of the Depression. I do not wish to see a World War Three. The best thing I believe we can do right now is help one another. Bring families together and invite in others, this was also another key ingredient to ending the Depression. We even have more room here, but I will need a second bathroom or a couple outhouses. Help each other and pray for one another.
Guess that's enough for now. I pray all of you are well. Oh, I read yesterday that Doctors are saying that if you cannot lay your hands on a mask for the virus that a silk scarf or even silk like will help you. Make sure it covers both nose and mouth, and wear gloves, even if its winter gloves or rubber dish washing gloves. BUT- clean them thoroughly when coming inside and hang them up to dry.
Another item I would recommend is having a well-maintained firearm and a knowledge of how it works, plus a good supply of ammo. Practice with it. If you don't believe you can use one, then disregard and find a hiding spot. Sadly, the human can become quite nasty when his or her life has become intolerable. I have spent 20 years as a police officer and I have seen the worst of man. I pray that never happens to you.
Blessings to all of you and please pray this virus will end and that the government doesn't abuse it to turn things around in our country. It has happened before and some of our just laws were ignored by our elected officials. You might check some of the laws Pres Roosevelt created and he died before he could cancel them. Later, Pres Obama pulled several of them up from the archives and considered using them for awhile. Nasty laws, takes a lot of human rights away from us. Forfeiture of all our arms, vehicles and homes. Really drastic stuff. You all have a pleasant weekend.
