Book Report: My publisher has asked me to do some rewrite on my story, "Rookie", which I am now working on. Should have it back to him the end of next week. Though I use fictional characters, "Rookie" is based on my first year as a police officer, where I worked for the Dillingham Police Department in Bristol Bay. Dillingham is about 300 miles southwest of Anchorage and can only be reached by boat or plane. The city plays host to the one of the largest salmon and crab fishing fleet in Alaska. We had a 5 man police department and after three days of instruction and without having attended the police academy yet, I was working the midnight shift by myself. Bars closed at 5 a.m., which is state law. Dillingham is the hub city for 13 villages. It's the northern-most town for the Aleut Native people and southern hub for the Inuit Indians. Previously, white man referred to almost all the coastal natives as Eskimo. But I learned this is a slang word the natives don't really like as it means "fish eater". I found that in Dillingham the natives people were mostly a fine and caring people group. But like any group, they had their share of trouble makers. Dillingham was about 65% Alaska Native and some 35% white, with only one Black man while I was there. Yes, alcohol was a severe problem and back then the only illegal drugs were cocaine and marijuana. I was surprised to learn that Alaska actually had bootlegger laws, for each community was either "wet", where bars and liquor stores were allowed, "damp", where there were no bars or liquor stores but you could bring liquor in for personal use from wet towns. Then there were totally "dry" towns, where no liquor was allowed at all. Bootleggers would either try to sneak the booze in or build stills and make their own. Even in Dillingham we had stills and we would conduct raids on them. I learned a lot working there and I use mostly my actual cases in the book and I think you'll find it exciting as well as educational. We had a major fishing strike while I was there, all over 2 cents a pound for salmon. Boats and houses were burned in anger, I was shot at and once another officer and I were set up for ambush- it's in the book. Bar fights became common. During the Beaver Round-up Festival, a big fur buying event, our two jail cells were both filled with 16- prisoners in each cell. I had one case that was a gang-rape, homicide and arson all from a single event. I arrested 8-men for that, but had assistance from the other officers. I do hope you enjoy the book and I'll let you know when it is published. I've also written 2 more books in this series, "The Badge and the Cross", that follow my career. I have two more planned for the series.
A Bit on the political side: I've received some interesting Emails from friends which led to my own research. I had seen this new clothing outfit called "Noracora" which advertised unbelievable prices for some fine looking clothes. I ordered a sweater for my wife, but it took over two months to get here and then I realized it had come from Mainland China. And it wasn't the sweater I ordered. Through what I learned from others and my own research, I have learned that China uses slave labor, there is even a suspicion that those one million Muslims held in 400 concentration camps in China are being also used. Buddhists do not like Muslims, not at all. I saw this in Thailand. I also saw that in Vietnam Buddhist monks were working alongside the Viet Cong. Anyway, I have also learned that the People Republic of China (Communists) have a law that allows their government to dive into their companies, such as Noracora and Huawei to secure funds to build up their military and to conduct military research. So in effect, when you ordered something from Mainland China, you are contributing to the Chinese military. This is one of the reasons how China has been conducting such major military build-up lately. Now if you have trouble believing me, do your own research and I recommend this. I had earlier done a lot of reach on China when I was preparing to write "A Coming Storm". Now I'm seeing the military equipment I created from my dreams have become a reality. Supertanks, new nuclear subs, super oil tankers...it's there and I started writing that book in 2005. If you have questions, please ask.

Some of you might remember that Christmas morning when we had 21 people in our living room and then the power went off for 8 hours. Oh what fun, oil lamps and all the loose wrapping paper all spread about. Blessing from Mom & Dad/ Akka and Appa ( Inupiaq for Grandmother and Grandfather.
God Bless you all. Bill
