This global warming thing is another item all together. Moose Pass was supposed to get another 1 to 2 feet of snow, but we only received 5-6 inches. Oh, its pretty outside, but already in the process of melting. Alaska has always been a bit strange in the weather department, we can have 12-15 feet of snow one winter and 6 inches the next. My coldest windchill factor was 122 below zero in Whittier in 1988, actual temp was outside Eielson AFB, central Alaska, at minus 82 degrees and that was in 1979. Warmest in Alaska was again at Eielson when the summer of 1980 hit 100 plus degrees. Alaska does tend to test the strength of its citizens, some tend to pull up stakes, while others refuse. This will be my 41st year up here and ending a 39th year for Mona. We've raised all but one of our children up here, but now jobs, the military and others things have taken three sons into the Lower 48. Joshua graduates tomorrow from Federal Police/FBI academy and then onto Washington D.C. He will be a uniformed officer for a while. John Leroy continues working for the feds as a uniformed officer in Anchorage, which he alternates with a police officer position in Whittier, handling the Seward Highway and the skiing town of Girdwood, which is under Whittier's watch, once the Alaska State Troopers pulled out. Elizabeth is staying with us for a bit, while Brady and Micah remain in Soldotna- 65 miles west of our place.
Mona and our doing well...I write and she takes care of our lives. She is very good at it, plus I have my granddaughter Canaan assigned to me as a care giver. Her main duty is to make sure I eat, which is a tough chore most days. I'm back under 200 lbs, again. We able to get back up to 224 lbs last month and it quickly vanished. I can eat all the chocolate and desserts I desire, what more could a man ask for. but, my favorite donuts are in Soldotna.
Had church services yesterday, but only 8 of us showed up at the beginning, so many home with the flu bug. But, by the time we finished there was 17 of us. Christmas Eve had a nice showing, but we didn't do a New Year's Eve Service. Our Pastor is working night shift at Spring Creek Maximum Security Prison in Seward. A great spot for a pastor to have a second job. He's a good man and the Lord clearly uses him in that place.
But as I started to say earlier, this whole thing about green houses gases, leaves me asking far too many questions. Oh, I know the Industrial Age set of the pollution age and we've added to it. But, about half of the scientists, the ones you rarely hear from, feel the earth's warming is a pre-condition to our next Ice Age. I doubt I'll see it in my lifetime, but my great-grandchildren might. I'll leave this to the Father, He's in charge anyway.
When the winter storm hit us night before last it came in with this incredible wind that shook the whole house, as if a large truck had struck and outside wall. Then the snow. Like I said, it's melting now as the temps have climbed above freezing. Soon, those temps will probably drop and well be surrounded in ice. Mona and I, and most people, wear different kinds of ice grippers under our boots. I still have my original pair, which resemble snow chains. Hard to find those now, as you can repair them, which I've done near countless times. Now they come in plastic, with tiny spikes in them. Not bad, but they break and you have to buy another set. Which is why they quit making my style, now over 30-years old.
I love Alaska, hard to believe I fought tooth and nail to get out of my military orders to Eielson. but, I had gotten out of two sets already to stay at Edwards Air Force Base, Mojave Desert, California. When I landed in Fairbanks, I just knew I had to get out of here. I left Los Angeles at 88-degrees and landed in Fairbanks at minus 22 degrees. I was wearing my Air Force Class a Uniform and nearly froze to death on the 22-mile ride to Eielson AFB. It took another three days to get my arctic gear and in the meanwhile I stayed inside whenever possible. But, I've stated a hundred times or more, within two weeks I had fallen in love with this frozen state. Now those who know me, know I am not very good with tools, I'm actually terrible. Mona couldn't believe she married a man who could break most tools or run in the opposite direction. She taught me how to use my first chain saw, having grown up in a family of loggers and cat-skinners. but 3 days from my 2nd re-enlistment and receiving my orders to go to Helicopter Mechanic School, I opted to leave the service for police work. You have no idea how many helicopter air crews I saved by doing that. Even now it is best to keep the tools out of my hands. Long ago I tried to tune-up our car, thinking it would be easy, but I broke-off three spark plugs in the engine. Since then, I've learned to have mechanical friends.
